Program Title:

Continuous Improvement of Your Organization's Performance

Year after Year

Speaker:

Kim Barnas - Vice President, Hospital Operations for ThedaCare

Speaker Bio:

Kim Barnas has a Masters of Science in Health Care Administration and serves as Vice President, Hospital Operations for ThedaCare in Appleton Wisconsin.  Her executive responsibilities support both Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center.  ThedaCare has been on a lean journey for the past 7 years.  The path started with Value Stream mapping followed by improvement events, and projects.  ThedaCare achieved breakthrough results, but lacked a systematic method to sustain improvement, clarify daily continuous improvement and deliver on policy deployment.  Ms. Barnas and her team have led the development of a management system in the hospital division.  Utilizing lean thinking, the system is designed to deliver improved performance through a predictable process that identifies defects, solves problems and develops people.  This system aligns the policy deployment strategies with the work at the bedside.

Abstract:

ThedaCare has developed a management system called the Business Performance System which is designed to help managers understand their performance and meet their targets while developing people and building effective teams.  This presentation will focus on the point in the lean journey when simply solving process problems isn't enough and a systematic Lean management system is needed to sustain results. The ThedaCare Model will be highlighted.

ThedaCare, based in Wisconsin, is one of the first healthcare organizations in the United States to successfully adapt the Toyota Production Systems (TPS).  Their Lean improvement system, the ThedaCare Improvement System (TIS) has been in operation for seven years. While they had breakthrough results in the first years of TIS, the overarching goal of a sustained 10% productivity improvement per year, every year, was not being met. Reflecting on their progress, ThedaCare realized that their improvement strategy had a critical missing link. How would they sustain their transformational work?  Would it be possible to deliver daily continuous improvement without a delivery model? That is what led to the development of the Business Performance System.

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
